Sports in The Canary Islands

The Canary Islands; synonymous with glitz, glamour, and gorgeous beaches. A taste of the Spanish Riviera in the Atlantic.

These islands are eternally chic,  Visitors come for pampering without pomp, inimitable Spanish flair, world-class beaches, and the promise of eternal sun and blue skies (it rarely rains).

In spite of their tony reputation, these islands diligently maintain their quaintness, warmth, and an almost old-fashioned storybook quality.

Fishing in The Canary Islands

Sport fishers don’t simply aim for anything in sea, just for the sake of the catching. Game fish like marlin, tuna, tarpon, sailfish, mackerel, and even sharks are the goal of the sport fisher; the thrill of tussling with a 1000 pound fish on the open seas is matchless, and it will leave you breathless.

And those us that are sensitive to the environment, will also enjoy this sport, since the fish that are caught, aren’t always served for dinner. Catch and release is the order of the day, and oft times, after catching a big fish, the fish are fitted with identity tags, their vital signs are recorded and then they released back in to the ocean. How noble is that?

Surfing in The Canary Islands

Come to where trade winds and coral reefs combine to produce waves up to 15 foot high and create conditions for spectacular double somersaults above a 26C sea. Join those who chase the wind.

Surf riding, with or without sail, is enjoying a boom and there are excellent facilities throughout our countries. The trade winds build up a powerful swell on the open sea, which is driven east to break on Atlantic-facing coasts.

This warm water swell provides perfect conditions for surfing. In the many reef-sheltered bays, wind-surfing has developed into one of the most popular watersports in the Canary Isles. Competitions are widespread, some of them world championships.

Both surfing and windsurfing require superb body control, excellent physical condition and nerves of steel. At most tourist resorts, there are surf boards for hire and expert instructors. If you are learning, you can use a boogie board where the waves are gentler.

Golfing in The Canary Islands

The Canary Islands has always been a popular golf spot, but today there are more choices than ever for golfers.

You can take the sting out of missing that "gimme" putt by looking up to see the sea or the mountains, while inhaling the scents from the lush tropical foliage all around you. As an added bonus, you'll be challenged by often-tricky sea breezes along with that slice you haven't conquered yet. There are difficult waterfront holes and fairways that wind up and down hills.

Golf is widely available throughout The Canary Islands, especially on the larger islands. Casual golfers will find that most courses are open to play by visitors.

In the last 20 years or so, golf has been experiencing boom times and significant growth throughout The Canary Islands. It's a good vacation choice for golf.

So pack your clubs for your next trip to The Canary Islands and experience firsthand the fun of playing golf under the tropical sun!
